Laure Van Minden
I am presently enrolled at Norwich University of the Arts doing an MA in Fine Art. Language is the backbone of my practice. I draw with words and write drawings. Traces left behind and the presence of the absence also fascinate me...

"Hum an"
The word human instantly brings to mind Rag'n'Bone Man's song Human. The first time I heard this song was almost a year ago when I was working as a support worker in a low secure unit hospital for adolescents suffering from mental health problems. I will always remember the deep and sad irony that...

Harmonious score.
This drawing was made while listening to "Harmony" with both hands and eyes closed. The relaxing notes guided my moves on the paper. I was in the moment.

Score for sadness.
Responding to "It will all be fine" allowed me to be in the moment concentrating on the music being played. I like the repetitive notes and the occasional word. I listened to the piece three times and drew with my eyes closed each time using both hands. A graphic score slowly emerged...

The artist mother
I tried to convey the dichotomy between two facets of my identity: me as a mother and me as an artist. I aimed to reconcile both in this image by drawing / writing as I saw myself, simultaneously with both hands and with my eyes closed. Definitely two separate entities....not sure I like either...

"Trou noir"
I cannot think of the cosmos without the thought of a black hole and the helpless feeling deriving from it. The mirror writing shapes the repeated words "trou noir" (black hole) to reach its compact centre .

8 minutes
"It takes eight minutes for sunlight to travel 93 million miles to earth." I mirror wrote these words for 8 minutes to have a "feel" of space in time. What drawing, or rather dance, would appear on paper after time was over? The outcome looks like an embryo shape to me. However,...

"Explosure"
The letters of "cosmic" shape this image. The deconstruction of the word mirrors the endless activity of the universe enhancing the heat of the sun and the incommensurable stars.

Explosion
I associate the word "cosmic" with the immensity of the universe in which space is palpable through an explosion of colours.

"Butterflight"
The zingy taste of the rooibos, grapefruit and ginger drink stimulated my other senses (smell and touch), which led me to produce this piece. The butterfly symbol conveys the light element of the drink while the rooibos loose tea and ground ginger refer to its 100% natural side.

Liquid heat
Soaking the sunshine in my garden was a moment of pure bliss . Hiding my smart phone behind my "head of hair", I was bombarded with sunrays. I just freely played with the warm glow. I wanted to capture the surreal atmosphere and light I was bathing in through a series of snapshots.

L'Entre-Deux
Using Dulcie Wagstaff's Familiar Gardens for inspiration, I explore and investigate the collage technique in one of my screen print. Blaise Pascal's words on the print: "Le silence eternal de ces espaces infinis m'effraie" ("The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens...

"Entre amis"
My connections with the "Ooh la la" challenge is my French native status and my love of food. Using my French cursive handwriting (in mirror writing) and overlapping of words, I tried to convey the intermingling conversations, hoping to reflect the intimacy and buzzing atmosphere of the...

Africa
Using key words and images from One website, I focused on trying to show how one individual's act can impact on the world. My mirror writing is legible through the translucent paper while reflecting the basic flavours of the drinks.

"Drinking it all...
I used what is for me forceful images from One Drinks website (the African boy and water pipe) to try providing a transition and connection with the new drinks. The focus on the individual highlights the fact that one simple act of buying one single water bottle can be "life-changing" (in...

Busy bees
I used the hand mirroring technique (drawing / writing with both hands at the same time, without looking) to try and convey the buzzing bees. Each individual letter of the words "honey bee" is endlessly repeated...

Round dance and dancing...
The handwritten bees perform the round dance, which is complemented by the dancing shadows. The writing aims to convey a buzzing feeling and the round shape hopefully reminds us of the flower centre and the sunshine.

Serendipity
When somebody drove into my side mirror I couldn't help but seeing a fragmented view of my immediate surroundings....despite the initial frustration and anger. I quite liked the resulting distortion and if it hadn't been for health and safety I would have kept it....fragmented.

"Fearless"
My "fearless" version of "Fear Of No Lines" is born out of a blob of ink from which the word "fear" is written in mirror writing.

In between
Having fun interrupting my practice to recreate a new piece out of torn fragments. What is happening -or not- between each section is left for the viewer to imagine.

Weave in
Interruption of the creative process by using an unfamiliar material and genre for me. By tearing and weaving the fragments, a new piece emerged. I compare the weaving to all the artistic processes which unconsciously influence my own.

Porte
My love of Spanish immediately connected me with the title of Alvaro's piece. The word conjured images of a symbolic door imprisoning language. Its distressed surface, which acts like a palimpsest, bears the physical marks of the passage of time.

Lindsay's artwork resonated in me as an allusion to the unfathomable passing of time. My screen printed work strives to capture the essence of the written word while leaving traces behind. I pushed the screen printed technique further by forcing the dried paint through the mesh allowing only...
