The Formation of a new Colour.
Formation was an attempt to step right back to basics, to try and create from a clear perspective, sometimes the turning of the new year can help get oneself into that mind set, where clarity and new possibilities are within reach. I started this piece with nothing except sounds recorded outside on a bright clear day towards evening, the calmness of birds, the hum of a summer bee flying past the microphone. From this came the formation. I layered these sounds and listened to them over and over, the sound of cars adds a further wash of texture.
Slowly I put my fingers onto the keyboard and started to play some slow, deep sounds, a haunting ambient tone, I had no plan on what to play, I went with the feeling, it was improvised in one take but it felt pure, as if searching for a whole new colour. It lasted 20 minutes.
Later I carefully edited the piece, shortened it down. I added additional instruments, some string sounds, reverb and effects. Later in the piece there are layers of feedback which almost threaten to take over as the piece turns a little darker, the colour seems less bright - maybe I was struggling to maintain a clear perspective, as if the weight of 2016 and human folly pulls us down to a darker place. But I won't let that happen. The world might appear a dark place but we must seek the formation of new colours, clear perspectives and moments of calmness.
