Sam Spicer's piece 'Human Confusion' really resonated with me, and inspired this portrait of my grandmother, who has dementia. I wanted to continue Sam's idea of the mind as a tangled knot in the form of a continuous line drawing, to symbolise the web of thought that can so easily become confused and convoluted in people with cognitive dysfunction.
The flowers are forget-me-nots, used to illustrate both the condition my grandmother has and also how precious and beautiful her mind is, even in its fragility.
